Outsiders homework for the weekend (ELA)
Finding the Theme: “The Outsiders”
A THEME is the central message or life
lesson, or a recurring subject. Simply put, a theme is the BIG IDEA of the story.
1.
Do the Greasers have
the same opportunities as the Socs?
2.
How are the
characters judged by others? What assumptions do people make about Ponyboy?
3.
What do you think
the story is about so far?
Here is a list of some common themes in literature. Circle the themes that could apply to “The Outsiders”. (You
may write your own themes down and circle that as well.)
Examples of Common Themes:
Evils of racism
Facing darkness (evil)
Facing reality
Fear of failure
Loss of innocence
Love and friendship
Inequality and injustice
Stereotypes and identity
Heroism, honor, and sacrifice
